Chinese New Year 2010 Part 1

Chinese New Year is one of my favourite festivals these few years, not because of the celebration itself, but because of the only chance of the year for our whole family to spend some quality time together, since 5 of us are located in 4 different places in Malaysia!

This year, we decided not to celebrate the holiday at home for some reasons:

1) Since it is so hard for all of us to get together, we would rather do something special together than sleeping at home.

2) It is wise to spend money on vacation rather than all those junk food and soft-drinks which will take us ages to finish up. Believe me, you can always find food which is kept almost a year or years in our fridge or cupboard, and the food will end up sleeping in the dustbin, rather than in our stomach! :S

The first plan for the vacation was a Korea Trip, but the expected expenses was too wonderful, especially during this special occasion. Bangkok was our destination in the end. Since "Everyone Can Fly" now, Bangkok trip wasn't that expensive anyway. Special thanks to my dad who volunteered to sponsor all the air-tickets for the trip. :)

First stop was KL. KL, being the capital of Malaysia, had the dullest Chinese New Year celebration throughout the country (sorry to all KL people, but this is the truth for a traveller :S) Shops were closed (hey, you certainly aim for shopping in KL right?! What do you think you can do if shops were not open?!), and hawker food was 10% more expensive during Chinese New Year (what is the rationale behind this?)!

There was nothing much we could do on the first day in KL, i.e. the New Year Eve. Maybe the more interesting part was about our reunion dinner? Since it was a reunion dinner, we did not mind splurging a little bit. We booked a table of 5 in "Crystal Jade Restaurant" in the Gardens Mall.

(From the left) We had shark fin in chicken soup, which costed us RM100+ per bowl; a prosperity platter, which includes 6 different meat dishes: barbecued pork ribs, braised duck webs, roasted duck, roasted chicken, jelly fish and braised abalone; an assorted vegetable and mushroom dish; and a lettuce with scallop (not shown here). The food was fine, except that I did not like the second dish much. The bill was certainly quite wonderful, with RM877.20!

After the dinner, we decided to shop around in the mall before heading to the cinema for our movie at 9pm. Most of the shops were closed around 6pm that night, so there was nothing much we could do. We watched a local production "Woo-hoo", which was presented by MY FM DJs and Astro show hosts. The movie was great, humorous, and touching. Let's have a round of applause for 林德荣. I really like his "ah beng" character. Ha.
